Student Housing in Belgium
In Belgium, there are two main paths you can take to find housing as a student. The first is through university housing or student residence halls (“kot universitaire” / “studentenkoten”) offered directly by the institution. The second option is to rent accommodation on the private market, where many students share apartments or rent individual studios known simply as a “kot.”
University Housing
University housing, often referred to as student residence halls, is run directly by higher education institutions and usually consists of furnished single rooms with shared kitchens and bathrooms. Some universities also provide studio-type accommodation with private facilities.
These residences are typically more affordable, and they offer a ready-made community of fellow students. However, places are limited and priority is often given to international students or those with particular financial needs, so applying early is essential.
Private Accommodation
The private market offers a much broader choice, from the traditional Belgian “kot”, a furnished student room in a shared house, to private studios and shared apartments.
This is a more expensive option but allows students more freedom of choice. This can be an excellent option for students with families or older students who no longer wish to live in student housing.
However, choosing an apartment can be a challenge without being there in person. If you do choose to take this route it will be easier to go through housing managed by a company such as a serviced apartment or co-living accommodation.
