The Cost of Attending University in the Netherlands

Tuition Costs

International students who are not citizens of the European Union or European Economic Area are required to pay tuition fees. For students at the bachelor's or master's level, tuition fees in the Netherlands range from €6,000 to €20,000 per year, varying by university and program.

Financial Aid

For American international students, there are three paths to access financial aid in the Netherlands: through the US, through your university, and through external organizations.

Below is an overview of US federal student aid and external aid available to international students in the Netherlands. Information about funding available directly from universities can be found on the University’s website. Keep in mind that most universities in the Netherlands only offer funding on the basis of academic performance rather than by financial need.

FAFSA: U.S. Federal Student Aid

FAFSA is an application form used to determine eligibility for U.S. federal financial aid based on a student’s financial situation.

American students enrolled at participating international universities may be eligible to receive a federal student loan to help finance their education abroad.

What is a Direct Loan?

A federal student loan that eligible students and parents borrow directly from the U.S. Department of Education at participating schools.

Undergraduate Students

Undergraduate students may receive a Direct Subsidized Loan or a Direct Unsubsidized Loan.

Parents of dependent undergraduates may qualify for a Direct PLUS Loan for their children.

Graduate Students

For graduate students, Direct Unsubsidized Loans and Direct PLUS Loans are available.

External Funding Opportunities

External aid can come in the form of grants, scholarships, or fellowships awarded by organizations other than the university or the government. These can be organizations that specifically target students in the Netherlands, in a certain area of study, or from a certain background.
