Austrian Student Visas

Upon acceptance into a qualifying study program, you will be required to apply for a “Residence Permit – Student” at the Austrian embassy or consulate in your home country and await the decision there.

Once approved, you can travel to Austria, register your arrival with the authorities, and collect your residence permit.

Financial Requirements

In order to qualify for a residence permit, you must prove that you have sufficient funds to afford the cost of your degree and the cost of living in the Netherlands. These funds can be comprised of your personal savings as well as grants, scholarships, loans, and/or a sponsorship.

 Proof of a minimum of 3 months of housing secured. (e.g., rental agreement or accommodation contract with a student hall of residence)

Tuition

The OeAD does not explicitly state that your tuition must be paid ahead of applying for a residence permit, but we recommend having this completed to avoid any hiccups at the consulate.

Declaration of other expenses

Loans, maintenance payments, or other financial burdens must be declared for the evaluation of your proof of sufficient means.

Health Insurance

Proof of Austrian health insurance or a statement that you will have it upon arrival.

Police Clearance Certificate

For Americans, this must be an FBI background check.

Sponsorship

Students can be sponsored by their parents or another person in Austria or abroad. To qualify, the entirety of the amount required for your proof of funds must be in your bank account at the time of applying, and the sponsor must submit a form declaring the funds as being for your use, along with proof of where they got the funds

Legalized Documents

Some documents, such as your degree and police clearance certificate, must be notarized and apostilled.
